Stone Mountain residential refinishing
Stone Mountain Bathtub Refinishing: Is Your Older Tub Worth Restoring?
An older bathtub with chips, rust or a worn finish is not automatically a candidate for replacement. Bathtub refinishing and reglazing can restore many of them, but not all. Here is how we evaluate an older tub for Stone Mountain homeowners and when we recommend something else.

Cosmetic or structural
What kind of damage does your tub have?
Most problems on older tubs are cosmetic or surface damage, which refinishing is designed to correct. Structural problems need a different fix.
| What you see | Type | Usual recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Dull, worn or scratched gloss | Cosmetic | Usually refinished |
| Stains that will not clean out | Cosmetic | Usually refinished |
| Dated color (pink, green, yellow, beige) | Cosmetic | Refinished in a new color |
| Small chips in porcelain or enamel | Surface damage | Repaired, then refinished |
| Surface rust around the drain or overflow | Surface damage | Repaired if the metal is sound |
| Hairline cracks in fiberglass or acrylic | Depends on cause | Assessed; often repairable |
| A floor that flexes, or a leak through the tub body | Structural | Fix the cause first, or replace |
General guidance only. Every tub is assessed individually.
Our approach
How we evaluate an older bathtub
Step 1: Identify the material
Cast iron, enameled steel, fiberglass and acrylic each wear differently and call for different repairs.
Step 2: Separate cosmetic from structural
Wear, stains and color are surface issues. Flexing, leaks and rot beneath the tub are not.
Step 3: Check the damage closely
Chips, rust and cracks are judged by size, depth and whether the material underneath is still solid.
Step 4: Weigh refinishing against replacement
If the tub is sound, refinishing keeps it in place. If it is not, we will say so.
Step 5: Agree on the plan
You get a recommendation covering any repairs, the refinishing itself and what to expect while it cures.

Repairs that often come before refinishing
How long a refinished tub can last
Unique Refinishers has evaluated and refinished bathtubs for more than 55 years.
In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.
Not sure about your tub?
Send us photos of the damage. We will tell you whether refinishing makes sense or whether replacement is the better choice.
Stone Mountain homeowner questions
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether damage is cosmetic or structural?
Press on the tub floor and look under any access panel. A floor that moves, soft or damp flooring nearby, or water stains on the ceiling below point to a structural problem. Wear, stains, color and small chips are cosmetic. Our guide to common bathtub surface problems has more examples.
Can a rusty bathtub be refinished?
Often, yes. Rust on enameled steel or cast iron is removed and the area is repaired before refinishing, as long as the metal is not rusted through. See bathtub rust removal and repair.
Is every older tub a good candidate?
No. A tub that leaks, flexes or has a badly damaged base is usually better replaced or repaired underneath first. Read can every tub be refinished? for the details.
When does replacement make more sense than refinishing?
When the tub is structurally unsound, when you want a different size or layout, or when the bathroom is being fully gutted anyway. Our refinishing vs. replacement comparison walks through the trade-offs.
What do you need from me to evaluate my tub?
A few clear photos of the whole tub and close-ups of any chips, rust or cracks, plus the tub material if you know it. You can attach a photo to the estimate form on this page.
