Snellville residential refinishing

Snellville Bathtub Refinishing, Reglazing & Fiberglass Repair

Before you replace a worn bathtub or shower pan in your Snellville home, it helps to know what is actually wrong with it. Many tubs that look finished are only worn on the surface. We evaluate the damage first, repair fiberglass and chips where the base is sound, and refinish (reglaze) the surface when that is the right fix.

Evaluate first

What the wear on your tub is telling you

The right fix depends on the symptom. This table shows how we read the most common signs before recommending repair, refinishing or replacement.

Common bathtub symptoms, what they usually mean and the usual fix
What you seeWhat it usually meansUsual fix
Dull, chalky or rough surfaceThe top layer of the finish has worn away from years of cleaning.Usually refinishing
Yellowing or stains that will not scrub outThe surface has become porous and holds discoloration.Usually refinishing
One or two chips or a small rust spotLocalized damage in an otherwise sound finish.Spot repair, or repair then refinish
Hairline crack in a fiberglass tub or panSurface or gelcoat cracking; it needs a closer look at what is underneath.Fiberglass repair if the base is solid
Floor of the tub flexes or feels softThe support under the tub may have failed.Support must be fixed first; sometimes replacement
Water appears below the tub or on the ceilingA leak through the tub, drain or plumbing.Plumbing repair first; refinishing cannot seal a leak

Fiberglass and acrylic

Fiberglass tub and shower pan repairs

Fiberglass and acrylic tubs and shower units are common in homes built in recent decades. They wear differently from cast iron: the gelcoat thins and dulls, cracks start as fine lines, and the tub floor takes the most abuse. What we can repair:

  • Hairline cracks and small holes are filled and blended once the base is confirmed solid
  • Worn gelcoat on the tub floor, where most foot traffic lands, is repaired before refinishing
  • Stained or dull one-piece tub and shower units can be refinished in place without removing walls
  • Fiberglass and acrylic shower pans with dark wear around the drain are common candidates

Before you replace

Alternatives to replacing an existing tub

Replacing a tub is rarely just a tub job. In most bathrooms, the tub is set in before the wall tile or surround, so taking it out usually means removing tile, drywall and sometimes flooring, and reconnecting plumbing. When the tub itself is sound, these options keep it in place:

Repair only for isolated chips or cracks in an otherwise good finish. Repair and refinish when there is damage plus general wear. Refinish with tile when the surround is dated too and the tile is still firmly attached.

When the tub is failing, replacement is the honest answer, and we will say so. For a fuller comparison, read refinishing vs. replacement.

How long a refinished tub can last

Unique Refinishers has refinished bathtubs for more than 55 years. Non-abrasive cleaners and avoiding suction-cup mats help a refinished surface last.

In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.

Not sure what your tub needs?

Send a photo of the whole tub and close-ups of the damage. We will tell you whether repair, refinishing or replacement fits.

Snellville homeowner questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my Snellville tub can be refinished?

Start with the table above. If the problems are on the surface (wear, stains, chips, color), refinishing usually fits. If the tub flexes, leaks or is cracked through, those issues come first. A photo of the whole tub and close-ups of any damage help us give you a straight answer.

Can a cracked fiberglass tub be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, if the crack is in the surface and the base underneath is solid. If the tub moves when you stand in it, the support has to be addressed and replacement may be the better option. Our fiberglass tub repair page explains how we evaluate it.

Is reglazing worth it compared with a new tub?

For a sound tub with surface wear, it often is, because replacement usually disturbs the surrounding tile, wall and plumbing. We do not publish set prices or savings figures; your estimate depends on the tub and repairs. Our cost guide covers the factors on both sides.

Can you fix just a few chips?

Yes, when the rest of the finish is in good shape. On a worn or discolored tub, a repaired spot can stand out, so a full refinish may look better. See our chip repair guide.

What causes a refinished surface to peel, and can it be redone?

Peeling usually comes from poor preparation or moisture during an earlier job. It can generally be redone once the failing coating is fully removed. Our guide to bathtub surface problems explains common causes.
