Norcross residential refinishing

Norcross Bathtub Refinishing & Reglazing: Practical Alternatives to Replacement

Many Norcross homes, townhomes and rental properties still have their original bathtubs. When the tub is sound but the surface is worn, stained or chipped, bathtub refinishing (also called reglazing) can renew it in place, often without disturbing the tile and plumbing around it.

Your options

Repair, refinish or replace: three ways to handle a worn tub

Replacing a bathtub is not the only answer, and it is not always the wrong one. The right choice depends on what is actually wrong with the tub.

Spot repair

Best for: A tub in otherwise good shape with one or two chips, a small rust spot or a scratch you keep noticing.

Limits: On a dull or discolored tub, a repaired spot can still stand out against the worn finish around it.

Refinishing (reglazing)

Best for: A sound tub with general wear: lost gloss, stains that will not scrub out, scattered chips or a color that no longer suits the room.

Limits: It renews the surface only. It cannot fix a tub that leaks through the body or a floor that flexes underfoot.

Replacement

Best for: A cracked or failing tub, an active leak, or a remodel that moves walls, changes the tub size or converts to a walk-in shower.

Limits: Removing a tub usually disturbs the surrounding tile, drywall and plumbing, so the job reaches well beyond the tub itself.

For a deeper comparison, read refinishing vs. replacement. We do not quote savings percentages; your estimate depends on your bathroom.

Established properties

Why keeping the tub often makes sense in an older bathroom

In an established home, the tub is rarely a standalone fixture. It is boxed in by tile, walls and plumbing that were built around it. Taking it out tends to start a chain of other work. These are the situations where refinishing is most often the practical choice:

  • Original wall tile set tight against the tub, which replacement would usually damage
  • Heavy cast iron or enameled steel tubs that are hard to remove and still structurally sound
  • Tubs refinished once before, where the old coating has to be stripped before a new one goes on
  • Rental and investment properties where the goal is a clean, durable surface between tenants
  • Townhomes and condos where hauling a tub through shared hallways or stairwells is awkward

How it works

From first photo to refinished tub

  1. Step 1: Look at the whole tub

We check stability, the type of tub, any earlier coating and how far the damage goes, often starting from your photo.

  2. Step 2: Recommend one path

Spot repair, full refinishing or replacement. If keeping the tub does not make sense, we tell you.

  3. Step 3: Repair and prepare

Chips, rust spots and qualifying cracks are repaired, old failing coatings removed and the surface prepared so the new finish bonds.

  4. Step 4: Apply the new finish

The refinishing coating is applied in place, with a slip-resistant bottom added if you ask for one.

  5. Step 5: Cure and care

The tub stays dry while the coating cures. You receive care instructions for your finish.

Reglazing and refinishing describe the same process; our refinishing vs. reglazing guide explains the terms, and the drying and curing guide explains why the tub must stay dry afterward.

How long a refinished tub can last

Unique Refinishers has refinished bathtubs for more than 55 years. Gentle cleaners and a bath mat without suction cups help a refinished surface last.

In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.

Norcross homeowner questions

Frequently asked questions

Is refinishing really an alternative to replacing my Norcross bathtub?

For a tub that is solid and not leaking, often yes. Refinishing addresses the surface: wear, stains, chips and color. If the tub is cracked through, flexes, leaks or no longer fits the layout you want, replacement is the better choice, and we will say so.

My tub was refinished years ago and is now peeling. Can it be redone?

Usually. The failing coating has to be fully removed and the surface prepared before a new finish is applied; a new coat over peeling material will not hold. Our guide to bathtub surface problems explains common causes.

I own a rental in Norcross. Is refinishing practical between tenants?

It is a common reason owners call. Refinishing keeps the tub and surrounding tile in place, so there is less disruption than a tear-out. Tell us when the unit will be empty and we will discuss scheduling, including the time the tub must stay dry while the coating cures.

Can you repair just the chipped spots instead of refinishing the whole tub?

Yes, when the rest of the finish is in good condition. A photo helps us judge whether a spot repair will blend in. See our chip repair guide.

What does refinishing cost compared with replacement?

It depends on the tub, the repairs needed and whether tile is included, so we do not publish set prices. Estimates are free, and our cost guide covers the main factors on both sides.
