Duluth Bathtub Refinishing & Reglazing for Bathroom Updates
Many Duluth homes have bathrooms that work well but look their age. When you are updating a bathroom in an established home, bathtub refinishing (also called reglazing) can give a sound tub, its tile surround or a shower a new finish in place, so the rest of the project can move ahead without a tear-out.

Established homes
Tub types common in established Duluth homes
Much of Duluth's housing was built as Gwinnett grew from the 1980s into the 2000s, so many bathrooms still have their original fixtures. These tub types are common in homes of that era, and each has something we check before recommending refinishing.
Deck-mounted garden tub
A large oval or rectangular tub dropped into a tiled deck, common in primary baths. Refinishing renews the tub where it sits.
Check first: Cracked deck tile or failed caulk where the tub meets the deck.
Corner tub
An angled tub that fills a corner of the room, often in almond or a pastel. A color change to white or a neutral is the usual request.
Check first: Tell us if it has jets, so the fittings and shell can be assessed first.
Tub-shower combination
The everyday hall or secondary bath: a tub with a tile or one-piece surround. The tub floor, where water and feet land, usually shows wear first.
Check first: Soft spots in a fiberglass floor or loose tile in the surround.
Builder-grade almond or bone tub
A sound tub in a color that no longer matches new white fixtures. Refinishing changes the color without removing the tub.
Check first: Any earlier refinishing that is now peeling and must be removed.
Bathroom updates
Common bathroom updates where the tub can stay
In an established home, the tub was usually installed before the tile and walls around it. Keeping it, and changing only its surface, avoids reopening that work. These are the updates where refinishing is most often a good fit:
- A primary bath getting a new vanity and floor, where the built-in tub and tile are staying
- A hall or kids’ bath with a stained or chipped tub that no longer matches the rest of the house
- A guest or basement bath that gets light use but still needs to look clean and current
- Preparing a home for sale, when a dated tub stands out in listing photos
- A garden or corner tub set into a tiled deck, where removal would mean rebuilding the deck
Refinishing renews the surface only. A tub that is cracked through, leaks or flexes underfoot needs a different answer; see refinishing vs. replacement.

Tile, showers and sinks in the same update
If the tub is being refinished, it is worth looking at the surfaces next to it. Sound but dated wall tile can be refinished to match the new tub color, and a stained shower pan or a chipped sink can sometimes be handled in the same visit. Loose tile, failed grout or water damage behind the wall has to be repaired first.
How long a refinished tub can last
Unique Refinishers has refinished bathtubs for more than 55 years. Gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and a bath mat without suction cups help a refinished surface last.
In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.

Duluth homeowner questions
Frequently asked questions
Our Duluth home still has its original tubs. Are they too old to refinish?
Age alone is not the deciding factor; condition is. A tub that is solid, does not flex and does not leak is usually a candidate, whatever its age or color. Send a photo of the whole tub and close-ups of any damage and we will tell you what we see.
Is reglazing the same as refinishing?
Yes. Reglazing, resurfacing and refinishing all describe applying a new bonded finish to an existing tub. Our refinishing vs. reglazing guide explains the terms.
Can you change an almond or colored tub to white?
Yes. A color change is one of the most common reasons homeowners in established neighborhoods call us. If the wall tile around the tub is also dated, it can often be refinished in the same color so the two match.
My garden tub is set into a tiled deck. Does it have to come out?
Not for a surface update. A deck-mounted garden or corner tub can be refinished where it sits, which leaves the deck, tile and plumbing in place. If the tub is cracked through or leaking, replacement may be the better choice and we will tell you.
How long will the bathroom be out of use?
The tub has to stay dry while the new coating cures. We confirm the timing for your finish when we schedule, and our drying and curing guide explains why it matters.
