Bathtub Refinishing in Atlanta, GA
Restore a stained, chipped or dated bathtub in your Atlanta home with professional refinishing, reglazing, chip repair and color updates, without removing the tub or rebuilding the bathroom around it.
Before
AfterKeep the tub you have
A fresh finish without a full bathroom tear-out
Your bathtub may have years of useful life left, even if stains, chips, scratches or an outdated color suggest otherwise. When a tub is structurally sound, refinishing renews its visible surface while the fixture, the tile and the layout stay where they are.
From a worn cast iron tub in a Grant Park home to a discolored fiberglass fixture in a Midtown condominium, we evaluate the existing surface first and explain whether restoration makes sense. The recommended service depends on the tub’s material, condition, prior coatings and repair needs.

Materials
Types of bathtubs we refinish
Different materials need different preparation and repair methods, so we evaluate the fixture rather than assuming every tub needs the same treatment.
| Bathtub material or style | What we assess |
|---|---|
| Porcelain-enamel tubs | Chips, stains, pitting, worn enamel and exposed metal |
| Cast iron tubs | Surface condition, localized corrosion, structural integrity and support |
| Steel tubs | Enamel damage and whether corrosion has compromised the metal |
| Fiberglass tubs | Scratches, discoloration, cracks, shell stability and excessive flexing |
| Acrylic tubs | Surface wear, staining, prior coatings and structural stability |
| Cultured marble | Surface condition and compatibility with the restoration process |
| Clawfoot and specialty tubs | Interior and exterior finishes, hardware, access, jets and controls |
Many of these fixtures can be restored when the underlying structure is sound. Specialty tubs may need extra planning around exposed plumbing, decorative feet, jet openings or service panels.
Common problems
What refinishing can and cannot address
A tub that looks worn out may need surface restoration rather than replacement. Depending on its condition, refinishing and qualifying repairs may address:
- Persistent staining and mineral deposits
- Yellowing, fading or uneven discoloration
- Dull, rough or worn finishes
- Chips, scratches, minor gouges and surface pitting
- Localized rust around damaged enamel
- Peeling or failing previous coatings
- Eligible hairline cracks in stable fiberglass or acrylic
- Outdated colors such as pink, blue, almond or avocado
The cause matters as much as the appearance. Large or recurring cracks, severe rust-through, active leaks, soft flooring and significant tub movement need further assessment. Refinishing should not conceal a structural problem or unresolved water damage.
Before
AfterHow it works
Our bathtub refinishing process
Step 1: Inspect the fixture
We assess the material, existing finish, chips, scratches, rust, cracks and previous coatings. Signs of movement or moisture are discussed before any work goes ahead.
Step 2: Clean and prepare
Soap scum, body oils, mineral deposits and cleaner residue that could interfere with adhesion are removed, and nearby surfaces are protected.
Step 3: Repair qualifying damage
Eligible chips, scratches, pitting and other localized defects are repaired and smoothed with methods suited to the tub material.
Step 4: Bond and coat
The prepared surface receives a compatible bonding system and a professionally applied coating, including an approved color change if you choose one.
Step 5: Cure and aftercare
You get clear instructions on when the tub can return to use and how to care for the new finish.
Planning
How long does bathtub refinishing take?
Many standard projects are completed in one visit. Additional repairs, previous coatings, bathroom access and tub-and-tile work can extend the appointment.
Curing is separate from the on-site work. Your technician will give you the waiting period for your coating and conditions such as temperature and humidity. Keep the tub dry, unused and clear of bottles, mats and accessories until then.
If you have only one bathtub, arrange another place to bathe in advance.
Bathtub refinishing vs. replacement
| Consideration | Refinishing | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Existing fixture | Remains in place | Removed |
| Main purpose | Restore a serviceable surface | Install a different or new fixture |
| Demolition | Usually limited | Often required |
| Surrounding tile and walls | Usually preserved | May require repairs |
| Plumbing changes | Often unnecessary | May be needed |
| Timeline | Often one visit plus curing | Often several days or longer |
| Best fit | Cosmetic wear and repairable surface damage | Structural failure or a bathroom redesign |
Replacement may be more appropriate for advanced corrosion, persistent leaks, major damage, or plans to change the tub’s size or location.
How long a refinished tub can last
Durability depends on preparation, the coating system, the original material, use and maintenance.
In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.
Atlanta homeowner questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does bathtub refinishing cost in Atlanta?
Pricing depends on material, size, condition, repairs, finish selection and whether surrounding tile is included. Request a free estimate for your actual project rather than relying on a generic price. Our cost guide explains what affects the number.
Can a previously refinished tub be restored again?
Possibly. We inspect the existing coating and the surface underneath before recommending the preparation and repair work needed. Peeling or unstable material has to be evaluated before another finish is applied.
Can you change my bathtub’s color?
An approved color change may be possible for an eligible fixture. We can discuss finish options during the assessment.
What cleaners should I use afterward?
Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners with soft cloths or sponges. Avoid scouring powders, rough pads and harsh chemicals. Confirm bath-mat compatibility and follow your technician’s care instructions.
