Part of a bathroom update

Where refinishing fits in your project

Many homeowners call us while planning a wider bathroom refresh: new paint, a vanity, lighting or flooring. Keeping a solid tub and refinishing it can be one of the simplest parts of that plan, as long as it is scheduled at the right point.

  1. 1. Decide early what stays

Choose whether the tub and tile stay before ordering vanities, paint or flooring, so colours and finishes work together.

  2. 2. Finish the dusty work first

Drywall sanding, demolition and tile removal raise dust that can settle on a fresh coating. Schedule refinishing after that work.

  3. 3. Refinish the tub and tile

Worn or dated surfaces are repaired and refinished in place, without removing the fixture.

  4. 4. Let it cure, then finish up

Once the coating has cured, new accessories, shower doors and final caulking can follow, as your technician advises.

Tubs, tile and showers

Updating worn fixtures without a tear-out

Dated wall tile and a tired tub are often what make a bathroom look its age. Both can be refinished in white or a neutral colour so they suit the rest of your update.

Refinishing changes the surface; it does not waterproof tile or fix loose tiles and damaged grout behind the surface. Those repairs come first. Our tile refinishing guide covers what to check.

Refinish or replace

How the two options compare

Replacement is the right answer for some tubs. For a solid tub with a worn surface, refinishing usually means less work around it. We do not quote savings percentages; your estimate depends on your bathroom.

Surface repair

Damage we repair before refinishing

Repairs are what make a refinished surface look even. We assess each tub first; a tub that is cracked through, leaking or unstable is not a refinishing candidate, and we will say so.

  • Chips and nicks from dropped items
  • Rust spots around drains and chips
  • Stains and discoloration that will not clean off
  • Dull, rough or worn finishes
  • Outdated colours on tubs and tile
  • Qualifying cracks and wear in fiberglass

Practical questions

What the work involves at home

The bathroom is ventilated during the work, and the tub cannot be used until the coating cures. If it is your only bath, or you have pets or small children, tell us when you call so we can plan around it. Timing depends on the coating and the room, so we confirm it for your project.

  1. Step 1: Evaluation

Photos or a visit confirm the material, condition and whether refinishing suits your tub.

  2. Step 2: Preparation

The room is masked and ventilated, and the surface is cleaned and prepared for the new coating.

  3. Step 3: Repairs

Chips, rust and qualifying cracks are repaired so the finished surface is smooth.

  4. Step 4: Refinishing

The new finish is applied in controlled coats.

  5. Step 5: Curing and care

The coating cures before use; you receive care instructions for the new surface.

How long a refinished tub can last

As part of a bathroom update, a refinished tub keeps the fixture you have and works with your new finishes. Its life then depends on care.

In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.

Caring for refinished surfaces

  • Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners and a soft sponge
  • Avoid scouring powders and harsh chemicals
  • Use mats without suction cups
  • Keep caulk lines in good repair

Peachtree City homeowner questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I refinish my tub before or after other bathroom work?

Usually after the dusty and messy work, such as demolition, drywall and tile removal, and before final accessories. Dust and debris can mar a fresh coating. We can talk through the order of work for your project.

Can I refinish the tile surround at the same time as the tub?

Yes. Tub and wall tile are often refinished together so the colours match. Refinishing changes the surface of the tile; it is not waterproofing, so loose tiles or water damage behind them need repair first. See our tile tune-up page.

Can we use the bathroom while the coating cures?

Not the tub. It needs to stay dry and clear until the coating has cured, and cure time varies with the coating, temperature and humidity. If it is your only bathroom, mention that when you call so we can plan around it.
