Assessment first
How service works from Sugar Hill
We plan Macon projects carefully so the visit is worthwhile for you. That starts with photos and an honest view of your tub.
Step 1: Send photos first
A photo of the whole tub and close-ups of any damage let us judge suitability before anyone drives down.
Step 2: Get an honest assessment
We tell you whether refinishing fits, what repairs are needed, or whether replacement is the better choice.
Step 3: Plan the visit
If refinishing fits, we give you an estimate and schedule the work with you. Timing depends on the project.
Is your tub a candidate?
Which tubs are suitable for refinishing
Usually suitable
- Cast iron, steel, fiberglass or acrylic tub that is solid and stable
- Surface wear, stains, chips or rust spots
- A colour that no longer suits the bathroom
- A previous coating that is peeling (we check whether it can be removed)
Usually better replaced
- Cracked through or rusted through the metal
- Leaking, or with water damage underneath
- Moves or flexes when you stand in it
- The wrong size or layout for what you want

What your tub is made of matters
Each material wears differently and needs different preparation and repair. Knowing which one you have helps us give you an accurate answer.
Porcelain on cast iron
Heavy, durable base with an enamel surface that wears and stains over decades. Often a strong refinishing candidate.
Porcelain on steel
Lighter than cast iron. Chips can expose the steel to rust, so they are best repaired early.
Fiberglass
Common in one-piece tub and shower units. Dulls and stains; qualifying cracks can be repaired.
Acrylic
Smoother and harder than fiberglass, but still scratches and dulls with use.
Shower pans and tile
Stained shower floors and dated wall tile can be refinished alongside the tub.

Damage
Damage refinishing can address
- Chips and nicks
- Rust around drains and chips
- Staining and yellowing
- Dull, rough or worn finish
- Outdated colours
- Fiberglass cracks and wear
- Peeling earlier coatings
Before
AfterRefinish or replace
Weighing the two options
Refinishing a sound tub means less demolition, keeping the fixture you already have and less disruption to the rest of the bathroom. Surrounding tile, walls and flooring are left largely as they are.
Replacement makes sense when the tub itself has failed or no longer suits the room. We do not quote savings percentages; your estimate reflects your tub and the repairs it needs.
The refinishing process
Step 1: Evaluation
Your photos, and a visit where needed, confirm the material, damage and suitability.
Step 2: Preparation
The bathroom is masked and ventilated; the surface is cleaned and prepared so the coating bonds.
Step 3: Repairs
Chips, rust and qualifying cracks are repaired and smoothed.
Step 4: Refinishing
The new finish is applied in controlled coats.
Step 5: Curing and care
The coating must cure before use. You receive care instructions for the new surface.
How long a refinished tub can last
Keeping a solid tub and renewing its surface is a long-term choice. How well it holds up depends on preparation, use and care.
In our experience it is not uncommon to see tubs we refinished 10–15 years earlier still in excellent condition. That is an observation from our own work, not a guarantee: results depend on the condition of the tub, surface preparation, use and cleaning. Ask about written terms for your project before work begins.
Care after refinishing
- Wait for the all-clear before using the tub
- Clean with mild, non-abrasive products
- Avoid suction-cup mats and abrasive pads
- Repair leaking taps so water does not stand

Macon homeowner questions
Frequently asked questions
Do you really serve Macon from Sugar Hill?
Yes. Unique Refinishers takes residential work in Macon and plans each job from our Sugar Hill headquarters. We do not have a Macon office or a local phone number; call 770-945-0072 or request an estimate.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
Photos let us tell you early whether your tub is a good candidate, so you do not wait for a visit only to learn it should be replaced. They also help us plan the materials and repairs for your job.
How do I know what my tub is made of?
Cast iron is very heavy and feels cold; a magnet sticks to cast iron and steel. Fiberglass and acrylic feel warmer and may flex slightly. If you are unsure, photos usually tell us, and our bathtub refinishing guide has more detail.
Is refinishing better than replacing for an older tub?
For a solid tub with surface damage, refinishing keeps the fixture and avoids demolition. For a tub that is cracked or rusted through, leaking or the wrong size, replacement is the better choice. We will tell you which applies.
